Recently I adventured my way over to St. Paul to experience the much talked about Caribe Bistro. For those of you that haunt the late night Twitter scene, you’ve probably noticed some of the wacky banter that goes on between good ol’ @foodstoned and @CaribeBistro. I figured it was about time I made my way down to meet the boistrous Chef Tony.
The food was great! It was as though I walked into a friends house and they had prepared a fantastic island meal; only they didn’t know they were cooking for me!
We started with the mango and cheese empanadas. I have to admit, I was skeptical. Something about mango and cheese seemed a little odd to my puny little Minnesota mind. They were however, great! Crispy on the outside, perfectly doughy and oozing with cheese and mango puree on the inside.
We also nibbled on the conch fritters. These were actually one of the main reasons (aside from meeting Tony) that I wanted to go! I mean, conch isn’t exactly something you come across everyday in our great state. These little fritters were delicious. Served with a banana ketchup & pickapeppa remoulade, they made for one hell of a snack!
For an entree I got the pork chop special. It was beautifully cooked and served with delicious white rice and chickpeas. My wonderful lady friend ordered the Jamaican Rundown; a coconut based crab stew. Again; SEAFOOD ALLERGY! So obviously I couldn’t taste it for myself, but she gleefully sucked it down!
If you’re looking for a different kind of home-cooked meal, then I’d say that Caribe Bistro in St. Paul, is probably the place for you!
